SMASHFEST AT EASTER

It’s another gloomy Saturday for speedway fans as the Nelson Speedway Association has been forced to cancel tonight’s meeting. Light rain fell this morning and it grew more steady from 3.30pm but there were severe weather watch warnings issued for the hills west of Nelson and, with the expectation that the track would cop a lashing from the tail of the foul weather, the decision was made to shelve tonight’s racing.

It’s been a challenging season for the team at the Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway. Their first attempt at running the Coca-Cola fireworks was lost to rain back in October while the second night of the New Zealand Sprintcar Grand Prix in January and night two of the recent Nelson Automotive Solutions Stockcar Teams Brawl/Vertex Super Cup/Ray White (Richmond) Youth Ministock Mania meeting were also rained off. The Challenge Cup superstock teams race between the Tigers and the Palmerston North Panthers was disrupted and postponed — then¬†canned when the Tigers couldn’t form a team — after the Panthers could not travel in the wake of the November Kaikoura earthquake.

Tonight’s feature was scheduled to be The Hits 89.6FM demolition derby. It’s the second attempt to stage a derby this season with one originally pencilled in for December before it was scrapped in a committee decision. Nelson Speedway Association president Wayne Martin said there was now only one option to accommodate the derby, with just the two-day Easter meeting left in the club calendar.

Due to the debris that is left on the track, the derby could not run on the Good Friday and will be moved to become the last event of the season, on Easter Saturday. The club has planned ahead for cooler weather and less daylight by starting both those race days at 4pm. The final rounds of club championships for TQ midgets and production saloons, which had been on the programme for this evening, have been scrapped with the titles decided on the two meetings completed so far.

Entries are still coming in for Easter with most classes attracting good visitor numbers. There will be extensive promotion leading up to that meeting with further details on this website, on the Nelson Speedway phone app and on the club’s Facebook page.
